Breast Feeding
Week
India has one of
the highest incidences of malnutrition
in the developing world.
The high incidence
is caused by: - Lack of information and awareness
- Poverty
- Absence of an adequate and balanced diet.
Malnutrition is a
widespread problem which has devastating consequences for both the child
as the mother and is an important factor responsible for high infant
and maternal mortality rates.
Every year, from 1st-7th August, Breast-feeding
week is celebrated in over 120 countries.
World Alliance for Breastfeeding
Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and
organizations concerned with the protection, promotion and support of
breastfeeding worldwide. Since 2001,
SIDART participated in World Breast-feeding Week at state level with
UNICEF,
Rajasthan field office’s support and with the NGO network of
SIDART. The contribution of SIDART was the organization of activities in
6 different districts (Tonk, Dholpur, Dausa, Jaipur, Baharatpur, and
Alwar).
- Informational
meetings for pregnant women and mothers at the district hospitals and
in villages and Breast Feeding coaching sessions for lactating mothers
were organized.
- SIDART also organized
workshops, trainings, a poster competition at schools, a quiz, and
street and puppet shows to generate awareness about nutrition issues and
improve community participation.
By means of the activities
organized during the Breast Feeding Week SIDART tries to expand the
awareness of the need for and the value of providing support to a
breastfeeding mother. The overall purpose was to encourage the practice
of breastfeeding.
