Rameshwari Shines

Rameshwari, Radha, and Sita Village volunteers from Lakhna
leaning in and expressing concerns to Hazarilal Nagar the Zila Pramukh, Jaipur
District.
Rameshwari Sain, a village volunteer from Lakhna, was one of the delegates present on the exposure
visit meet Hazarilal Nagar, the Zila Pramukh, on June 10, 2010. An exposure
visit allows the village women to gain experience in dealing with externals and
authority. Rameshwari Sain was one of the women that expressed her
village—Lakhna’s—concern to Mr. Nagar. The National Rural Employment Guarantee
Act, NREGA, that, as the title states, promises employment to those within rural
areas given certain criteria, had been on hold in Lahkna for some time now; this
was Rameshwari Sain’s concern. This hold up was preventing members within her
village from working and therein put a hold on their monthly income. Rameshwari
Sain expressed this concern to the Zila Pramukh with two other women village
volunteers from her village, Radha and Sita, they wanted NREGA works to start up
as soon as possible. These women, in the past shy and passive to their villages
concerns, were now poised, confident, and charged to see this issue resolved.
Hazarilal Nagar the Zilla Pramukh, listened to concerns raised by Rameshwari
Sain, and as she states “treated us very kindly”, and took action quickly to
remove the blockade. He immediately made one phone call to the Sanganar Block
Development officer, the officer responsible for the village area where these
women are from, and within a matter of three days the issue was resolved and
NREGA works started up again as informed by Rameshwari on Phone to the SIDART
Team on Phone. When Rameshwari Sain was contacted later, she said that she is
grateful to SIDART for having invited them for the exposure visit and given them
the training. In the guidance of Dr Pramila we have learnt how to address our
concerns. In the future if similar concerns arise she feels confident in
approaching and speaking with authority to work for village matters.
